Backend & APIs

Backend & API Development

Scalable APIs, authentication, business logic, integrations, data services and background jobs — the shared foundation that lets one product power web, mobile and TV experiences.

Do you build both frontend and backend?

Yes. We build the APIs, databases, authentication, integrations and admin tooling as well as the web, mobile and TV clients that use them. We can also build only the backend for your in-house app team, or only the apps against your existing APIs.

The backend is where a POC either becomes a foundation or becomes throwaway code. Decisions about data models, authentication, API contracts and integration boundaries are cheap in week two and very expensive in year two.

We make those decisions deliberately — and document them — while keeping the POC lean enough to deliver quickly.

What a backend POC typically proves

  • The data model supports the core workflows and reporting
  • Critical third-party integrations work with real credentials
  • Authentication works for every client type (web, mobile, TV)
  • Performance is acceptable at realistic data volumes
  • The API contract is understood and agreed by client teams

What we build

Backend services that stay maintainable

Product APIs

REST or GraphQL APIs with clear contracts, versioning and documentation for internal and partner clients.

Authentication & identity

Sign-in, SSO, OAuth/OIDC, device activation for TVs, roles, permissions and session management.

Integrations

Payments, CRM, ERP, identity providers, analytics, messaging and media services behind clean adapters.

Data services

Relational and document data models, caching, search and reporting pipelines.

Background processing

Queues, scheduled jobs, webhooks, notifications and long-running media or import tasks.

Cloud infrastructure

Environments, CI/CD, monitoring and logging on AWS or your preferred cloud.

How we approach it

Architecture sized for the stage you're at

A POC doesn't need microservices, but it does need boundaries that let you split things later. We start with a well-structured, modular backend and introduce distribution only when scale or team structure actually requires it.

Typical technologies

  • Node.js
  • Express
  • NestJS
  • PostgreSQL
  • MySQL
  • MongoDB
  • Redis
  • AWS
  • Nginx
  • Linux

We choose technology per project. See our technology approach.

Contract first

API shapes agreed with client teams early, so web, mobile and TV work can proceed in parallel.

Client-aware responses

TV and mobile clients need smaller, cache-friendly payloads; we design for that rather than one-size-fits-all.

Observability

Structured logs, metrics and alerts from the first deployment — not after the first incident.

Security basics

Input validation, least-privilege access, secrets management and dependency updates as standard practice.

Backend & API FAQ

Can you work with our existing APIs?

Yes. We can build new applications on your existing APIs, extend them, or add a new API layer (a "backend for frontend") that adapts legacy services for modern clients.

Can you provide a technical architecture before development?

Yes. Architecture and technical design are part of POC planning. For larger programmes we can deliver an architecture and roadmap as a standalone discovery engagement.

Do you build microservices?

When they're justified. For most new products we recommend a modular monolith first, with clear boundaries that can be extracted into services as scale or team size requires.

Backend & APIs

Need a backend that can grow with the product?

Tell us which clients the API must serve, which systems it must connect to, and where you expect growth. We'll outline what the POC should prove about the architecture.
